ZELIZNAK, Richard 'Dick'
Richard (Dick) Zeliznak passed away peacefully at Niagara Health St. Catharines Hospital following a brief illness on Sunday, January 7, in his 85th year. After graduating from Merritton High School, Dick was the first of his family to pursue a post-secondary education. He attended Hamilton Institute of Technology (now Mohawk College), earning a degree as a mechanical technologist. He completed his specialty certificate in metallurgy from McMaster University in 1963. He married the love of his life, Nijole Latauskas, on July 4, 1964. He and Nijole would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Dick started his career in Hamilton and Oakville before returning to Thorold to start his own business, Fantom Manufacturing, in 1971. He and Nijole operated Fantom Mfg. (“the Shop” as it was affectionately referred to as by family and friends) for 33 years before retiring in 2004. Over the course of those 33 years, the company supplied products to customers across North America and sold its technology to global customers located in Europe, Africa, and Israel. Outside of the Shop, Dick and Nijole prided themselves on the home they built at the corner of Old Thorold Stone Road and Thorold Townline. Dick and Nijole spent years planting every tree that exists on the property today and the beautiful gardens they tended to and shared with every visitor who stopped by the house. They hosted many events from their annual Labour Day pig roast to the Lithuania-based dance group, Vingis, over the years. There was no such thing as a stranger at their home. In addition to running the Shop, Dick was an active part of the Thorold community. He was elected to serve on Thorold City Council for two terms. He continued his service to the community as an appointee to the Committee of Adjustment and as an active part of various local organizations including the Historical Society, Thorold Horticultural Society, Thorold Arts and Crafts Committee, the Canadian Legion, Thorold Branch 17 and as a parishioner of St. Aloysius in Thorold South. Dick was an avid snooker player in his retirement and won several tournaments over the years. One of his favorite snooker moments was when he got to play alongside snooker great, Cliff Thornburn, at the National Club in Toronto. For five years, he and his son Andrew led the local wedding band Tzygani. Dick loved playing the button accordion alongside Andrew and the band. Anyone would be hard-pressed to name a polka that Dick didn’t love. Over those five years, Tzygani was a fixture on Friday nights at the Pine Street Restaurant in Thorold, Sunday nights at the Lancer in St. Catharines, and Club Capri’s New Year’s Eve celebration. They performed numerous weddings and other events throughout the Niagara Region, Hamilton, and Toronto including the St. Catharines Folk Arts Festival and Toronto’s Caravan. Dick is preceded in death by his parents Michael and Anna Zeliznak of Slovakia and his four siblings, Anne (Joe) Shugan, Marcia (Jim) McGraw, Mike (Olga) Zeliznak, and Dolly (Don) Green. He is survived by his wife Nijole, children Andrew (Chi) Zeliznak, Tania (Bob) Ensor, and Karen (Mike) Bailey-Chapman, and his grandchildren Lexi and Mikey and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the HAINE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold on Thursday, January 11 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 12 at 11:00 am at the funeral home, followed by burial at Lakeview Cemetery and luncheon. SMITH, Otto
Otto Eleazer Smith (Al) 1943-2024 passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully on January 1, 2024 in the Renfrew Victoria Hospital at the age of 80 years. Otto was born in the small community of Chance Cove, Trinity Bay in Newfoundland to parents Stephen and Virtue Smith. As a young man, Otto attended Corner Brook District Vocational School and completed a brick masonry program in 1967. Then in 1969, Otto followed his sweetheart Rita Stamp across Canada to build a new life for himself in the big city of Toronto, Ontario. After retiring, Otto and his wife relocated to Thorold in 2008 where he spent the last 15 years of his life.

Otto was a strong minded, yet sensitive soul. He was a loyal, humble and generous man who would give the shirt off his back for others. He valued the little things in life and would often stop to not only smell the roses, but photograph them as well. Otto kept himself busy by submersing himself in all things sports. He was devoted to his local teams and followed their games religiously. Otto also loved nature and enjoyed his daily walks by the pond with his two favourite animals, Bradan and Aliyah. His Journey’s Just Begun – Elle Brenneman

Don’t think of him as gone away
his journey’s just begun,
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched…
for nothing loved is ever lost
and he was loved so much.

SAGLOSKI (McShane), Leah Ann

January 15, 1952- December 27, 2023

Passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Thorold. Loving wife of Philip for 52 years, devoted mother to daughters Tara (Stephen) and Tiffany (Doug). Doting nana to Joshua and Jillian who she spoiled immensely, as well as her "grand puppies" Bandit and Wednesday. Beloved friend and confidante  to Nancy Jo Gamache. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Predeceased by infant son, Robbie, brother Kelly McShane and father Robert McShane. Leah wore many hats through her life, from beauty school dropout to bank teller to health care aide. She was a notoriously bad cook who loved to share stories about washing her first turkey in dish soap and making 'crispy critters'. She also loved to lament about being technology challenged and her ability to get lost driving practically anywhere. Leah was passionate about figure skating and was so very proud that we were three generations of skaters. She was a dedicated volunteer in the local skating clubs and with the special Olympics skaters. We will miss chasing fire trucks, late night pizza parties after bingo, shopping trips over the river and most of all, our days at the craft shows, when with a sparkle in her eye, she would always ask "are we bonding yet?" As per Leah's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. Cremation has already taken place. A celebration of her life will take place at a later time, details to follow. In lieu of flowers, we think Leah would love donations to the Special Olympics.

STAMPS, Myranda Kirsten
Our hearts are shattered. It is with profound sorrow we announce the passing of Myranda, following her courageous battle with cancer. Myranda was confronted with many challenges with the strength of a warrior to the bitter end. Her journey had continued obstacles and she kept pushing on with great strength. Myranda will be sorely missed by the love of her life, Nelson Ellingham and her beautiful baby boy, Carson, and her best friend with paws, Gus. Myranda also leaves behind her loving and devoted parents; Brenda and John Stamps, sister Casey Klerks (Kevin), her Oma Margaret Stamps, Mother-Father-in-law Ian and Diana Ellingham, sister-in-law Victoria Ellingham-Veneziano (Dan), Charles Ellingham. Cherished and loved by all, she will be greatly missed by many Aunts, Uncles and cousins. Predeceased by grandparents, Earl and Marion Patterson, and Cornelius Stamps. Myranda took after her Grandma Marion, and had the most artistic hand, mind and soft soul. Her artistry skills spilled into her work as she was very passionate about her employment at Schilstra Builders Inc. as a Planning Coordinator. Myranda had many friends and made new ones everywhere she went. Her kindness and spirited heart made it very easy for her to participate in every sport she endured; Soccer, Volleyball, basketball - and she always excelled. Every summer we traveled as a family, both when the kids were young and as adults, to Oliphant beach where she loved camping, lounging on the beach, campfires, and the simple life. Her perfect day involved a long scenic drive in the country, looking at old barns and houses and topped off with a double-scoop ice cream cone. We will greatly miss Myranda’s distinctive and infectious laughter, her klutzy mechanics, and her gentle love. Myranda was a lot of things to all of us, but her ultimate cherished role was Mom to her loving son Carson. She treasured every moment with him even though they were tragically too few. In lieu of flowers, we have started a fundraiser for Carson’s education fund. The link to donate is External link opens in new tab or windowhttp://ffnd.co/LDx2yD. A celebration of life will be held at Club Roma Pavilion on Sunday January 28, 2024 from 1-5pm. CICCI, Robert
It is with deep sorrow that the family of Robert Cicci announces his sudden yet peaceful passing at the age of 94 on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at St.Catharines General Hospital. He was the loving husband of Catharine (Savoia), the devoted father of Michael (Brenda) and Stephen (Jo), and the adored grandfather of Emma (Christopher Pye). "Uncle Bobby" was also cherished by dozens of nieces and nephews. Robert is survived by his sister Ursula Pelletier (John), and was predeceased by his parents Maria (Battistone) and Pasquale Cicci, his sister Emma Schiavo (late Louis), and his brother Arthur (late Marie). Robert was born on November 28, 1929 in Santo Stefano di Sessanio, province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy. He was a resident of Thorold since coming to Canada in 1933 with his family. His childhood was spent growing up with the close-knit West Street 'Old Boys', and he spent over 40 years of his adult life working at Thompson Products / TRW, making many close friends on the 'All Valve Grind Line'. Robert was known for his sharp wit, and was a man of many passions and technical skills -- electrical, electronic, and mechanical. He especially loved woodworking, and many of his family and friends still treasure his creations. Later in life he found joy in simple pleasures, such as challenging sudoku, crossword, and brain teasers. For many years he kept young with daily, year-round golf with his buddies at St.David's, followed by coffee talk (and a plain old-fashioned) at Tim's. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered, especially for the helping hands and expertise he was always willing to provide to family and friends. May he rest in eternal peace, after having a lasting impact  on the lives of so many. Robert's family would like to thank Jennifer and the other in-home nurses of CarePartners, all of the caring staff at Hotel Dieu Shaver during his rehabs, and the staff and residents at Westhills Care Centre for their care, compassion, and friendship. Weep Not For Me
By an Unknown Author

Weep not for me though I have gone
Into that gentle night
Grieve if you will, but not for long
Upon my soul’s sweet flight

I am at peace, my soul’s at rest
There is no need for tears
For with your love I was so blessed
For all those many years

There is no pain, I suffer not
The fear is now all gone
Put now these things out of your thoughts
In your memory I live on

Remember not my fight for breath
Remember not the strife
Please do not dwell upon my death
But celebrate my life

DALICANDRO, Jean Teresa (nee Berardi)

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jean Teresa Dalicandro on July 21, 2023. She had just turned 96 in early July. Jean is the beloved wife of the late Emilio (Meo) Dalicandro. Much loved mother of Janet (Doug Thompson), Dave (Monica Severin), Don (Dale Lindsay) and Rob (Caroline Moro-Dalicandro). Cherished grandmother of Ellen (Devin Trueman), Jennifer (Kerby Balen-Reed), Kayla (Aaron Heller), Ryan, Lauren (Phil Lukai), Jordan, and Trevor Thompson (Courtney Jarvis). Special great-grandmother of Abbigail Thompson, Freddie Thompson, Violet Heller and Bennett Heller. Pre-deceased by her parents, Angelina and Vincent Berardi, her two sisters and their spouses, Mary (Frank) Soda and Linda (Cecil) Farrell, nieces Diane Benz, Cindy Soda, Angie Davis and nephew Dennis Farrell, and in-laws Mary and Jim Dalicandro, Domenic and Rose Dalicandro, Lucy Dalicandro, and Rosalie and Earl Williamson. Survived by Eleanor (Mario) Galliera and Tom (Cathy) Dalicandro and a multitude of wonderful nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. A special thank you to her niece Linda-Jean for your weekly phone calls with Mom. She looked forward to those calls and the pyjama discussions so much. Jean’s family meant the world to her. She was engaged in our lives, celebrating life’s milestones with us and offering a comforting ear when things didn't turn out. Good food was another cornerstone of her life and she loved to cook and bake. Despite our best efforts though, none of us could ever prepare veal parmigiana like she did. Jean and Meo’s deep love for each other was undeniable. They were best friends and did just about everything together. It was such a joy to watch them when they stepped onto the dance floor. They enjoyed time with a small circle of friends, with much laughter and story-telling. She showed courage in the midst of her grief after losing Meo, determined to learn how to get things done in order to stay in her home, continue to drive and stay independent. She tended his beloved garden for many years after he was gone, with much pride and great success. When Mom was in her early 90’s, “Team Jean” started to form. While family was at the core, there were countless others who provided services, care and support to her. Our deepest appreciation to the Care Team at Wesburn Manor for their exemplary care of Mom this past year. We are so blessed to have such an amazing woman as our Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandmother. The family will receive family & friends at the HAINE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. He was the loving husband of Juliette (Savoia), the best dad ever to Ann-Marie (Peter) Tancredi, doting and proudest nonno of Melissa (Julia) Tancredi and Angela-Marie (Justin) Leroux. The most loved "Nonno Primo" to his great grandchildren Sofia-Marie, Mila Juliette and Matteo Primo. Loving brother to Veronica Mastroianni, Maria (late Arcangelo) Fiorillo. He travelled solo on the Saturnia ship as a young 18 year old from Italy to his dream land Canada, where he settled and made roots in Thorold with the assistance of his Rapattoni family. He became the best of friends with his cousin Tony Rapattoni from that day forward. He made his life in Thorold where he met the love of his life, the beautiful Juliette, whom he married and made a beautiful life together for the last 69 years. Primo loved community and was a parishioner at Holy Rosary Church in Thorold and a member of Club Roma, St. Catharines. A man whose pride and joy was his family - he lived with no regrets, travelling with his family and friends around the world. He loved music, social activities and was an amazing dancer, and would never turn down a good donut, chocolate or cold beer (from the glass). The presence of music, laughter and giggling of grandchildren in his home always gave him great pride and joy. He also loved watching hockey and soccer. He was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadiens, Juventus, and especially the Canadian Women's Soccer Team. Primo was a doting dad and proud grandfather who was always present in the lives of his daughter and grandchildren/great grandchildren. Sunday lunches and afternoons were spent at his home - they will not be the same without his presence at the head table. We will always remember the many talks and advice that he would give. Primo was a man of great wisdom and he is known for many of his "Primo-isms" and sayings that we will hold with us forever. We are so blessed and grateful to have had many years of memories, which now have become treasures. "There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in our heart." EDWARDS, Daniel Roy
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father and grandfather, Dan on September 16, 2022 at the St. Catharines General Hospital at the age of 100. Predeceased by his wife Ethel (2012). He was the last to pass away of the 9 children of Ernest, born in White Cloud, Indiana, and Priscilla, a British Home Child from Bolton, England, brought to Canada through Dr. Barnardo’s child emigration. We will miss Dan’s stories of growing up in the Western Hill, where he lived all his life and of WW II.  Dan joined the army at age 19 in 1941 (5th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, R.C.A., later the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment) and was overseas for 4 ½ years, along with three of his brothers. He served in England, Italy, Belgium, and Holland during WW II. His older brother Les convinced him to join him as a Bren gunner so they could stay together as the Bren light machine gun required 2 men to operate. In northern Italy, Les and Dan were taking cover in a farmhouse under fire after Les was shot and injured. Les told Dan to leave him. Instead, Dan carried Les out and swam across a canal to bring him to safety. Les was forever grateful. After the war Dan became a carpenter, worked at the Beaver Wood Fibre Company and then Cyanamid until retirement. In 1954 he married Ethel Maki a Finnish girl from Wisconsin, and he built their home on Chetwood Street next to the home his father built. They raised two children, Janice and Dale (Darlene) and have four grandchildren: Adam, Sara, Jennifer and Lianna. Dan enjoyed sports when he was young, especially baseball.  When we were growing up, he taught us to swim in the lake and how to skate and play hockey on the ice rink he made many winters in our yard. He played horseshoes in the Cyanamid Horseshoe League, on The Mavericks team for over 20 years, setting a few records. But the sport he loved the most was horse racing, and I am sure he sparked the love of horses in a few of us! Our family would like to thank the nurses and PSWs from Paramed, Irina, Linda, and Petronella for their compassionate care as well as the doctors, nurses and support staff at the St. Catharines General Emergency and 3rd floor. Cremation has taken place through HAINE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold. As per Dan’s wishes there will be no visitation or service. Interment will be on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 1:00pm at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice may be made as you wish.

McMILLAN, Donald Angus, M.D.C.M.
May 11, 1925 to May 29, 2022

Dad died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at the age of 97. Beloved husband of Christine (nee Zumstein) for nearly 70 years. Loving father and father-in-law of Bill (Judy), Doug (Katherine), Paula (Brian), Bob (Michael), Jim (Tammy), Gord (Sarah), David (Chris) and daughter-in-law Jane. Proud grandfather of Stuart (Ali), Claire (Stu), Paddy and Dougie (Tianna); Christie, Katie (Jeremy) and Scott (Kathleen); Megan, Stephanie (Eric) and Laura (Rob); Will, Andy, Cameron and Zoe; Matthew, Gus and Luke; Leah and Sarah. Great-grandfather of Alex, Robin, Oscar, Alice, Juliette and Josie. Predeceased by his parents, Dr. W.H. McMillan and Mary (nee Fraser) and his brothers Kenneth (1923) and William (2014). Dad was a proud, lifelong resident of Thorold, Ontario. After graduating from Thorold High School, he attended Queen’s University and graduated from the Queen’s Faculty of Medicine in 1949. Six of his children followed his lead and attended Queen’s with three becoming doctors, two of whom also graduated from Queen’s Medicine. After completing his internship, Dad joined his father’s medical practice in Thorold in 1950. In 1959, Dad and his father, together with Drs. Gordon Ralph, Don Myers and Eugene Caira, established the Thorold Medical Clinic and were joined in practice in later years by Drs. J.J. Fraser, Bill Blaikie, Peter Pringle and Tim Tatzel. Dad was a dedicated and caring physician and considered his patients as friends. His practice included many evening and weekend house calls, as well as daily visits to the local hospitals and nursing homes. Dad practised medicine in Thorold for 57 years, retiring in 2007 just after his 82nd birthday. While maintaining his busy medical practice, Dad was also heavily involved in local politics. Following in the footsteps of his father who had been mayor of Thorold before serving as a member of federal parliament from 1950-1965, Dad was elected first to the Public Utilities Commission, then served on Town Council under his good friend Mayor Cec Grose. Dad was elected mayor of Thorold in 1972 and served as both Mayor and Regional Councillor until his retirement from politics in 1985. One of his proudest achievements as Mayor was spearheading the drive to make Thorold a city, which occurred in 1975. Longtime residents of Thorold will also remember the Mayor’s Report, Dad’s weekly column in the Thorold News where he updated the community on local issues and kept political opponents on their toes. Like his father, Dad was also active in the local Liberal Party. In 2013, Dad was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to recognize his many years of service to the community. Despite his busy professional career, Dad always made time for his family. While evenings were filled with office hours or council meetings, Dad was home for family dinner every night. Some of his happiest days were spent on the dock at the family cottage on Muldrew Lake in Gravenhurst, Ontario. In his retirement, he and Mom were able to spend entire summers there, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. Growing up, Dad treasured summers spent in Blenheim and Port Elgin Ontario with his many cousins, aunts and uncles. Dad lived his entire life in Thorold. He was born at home in his parents’ apartment on Front Street, above Robinson’s bookstore, and died at home in the house that his parents built in 1940. A special thank you to the many kind caregivers who helped make it possible for Mom and Dad to remain at home so Dad could live out his last years in the home that he loved. Dad was a lifelong member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Thorold, where he served as an Elder as well as Clerk of Session. While he would have wished to have a funeral service at St. Andrew’s, Dad felt that Covid posed too great a risk. For this reason, a funeral service will be held outdoors in the park beside the Thorold Seniors Centre, 8 Carleton Street South, on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11am. There will be no formal visitation; however, Mom and family look forward to greeting friends and extended family following the service. For more information, please contact HAINE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold at 905-227-1732.  Cremation has taken place and Dad’s remains will be interred at Lakeview Cemetery with those of his parents and brothers in a private service.

WHITE, Eva (Szondi)
With devastating hearts, we sadly announce the very unexpected and sudden passing of Eva White on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the age of 53. Beloved wife of Richard (Rick) and loving mother of Robert and Krisztina (Scott), Richie and Sarah (Ryan). Dear grandmother of Kaiden, Anikó, Peyton and Ronan. Sister of Mária (Wolfgang), Tibor and Sándor (Györgyi). Predeceased by her mother Mária and father Károly.
Our family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Syed Faraz Masood, the nurses and the staff at the emergency and intensive care units of the Greater Niagara General Hospital for all their efforts on May 14th, 2022.
The world has turned so dark with the loss of the light which lead our way. Eva was the glue that held our family together far and wide. Born in Romania, she moved to Canada from Hungary with her children, Robert and Krisztina in December, 2000. Here, she met the love of her life Rick with whom she spent 13 loving years. Eva was the life of every party. A real spark who lit up every room she walked into. Anyone who was fortunate enough to know her, knew what a fun, good spirited and caring person she was. Her laugh was contagious and her geniality made it easy for anyone to feel at home in her presence. Eva loved to host family and friends at her home. She was an avid cook and took great pleasure in feeding anyone and everyone who was in the mood for some cabbage rolls, chicken parmigiana, Hungarian gulyás or a nice prime rib. The menu from her kitchen was ever changing and always appetizing. She was a true master of her craft. She left countless individuals eagerly awaiting the next meal she was going to whip up and outshine the last savoury masterpiece she served.
Eva’s greatest joys in life came from spending time with her family. She loved being a homebody with Rick and spending time with their children, grandchildren and two boxer dogs, Ali and Lily. She welcomed all of her sister-in-laws and their families with wide open arms. She embraced her beautifully blended family and cherished the special relationships she was able to gain through her love with Rick.
Whenever possible, she took the long trip across the Atlantic to see her brothers, sister, nieces and nephews. No matter the distance between her and her siblings, their bond never broke. Throughout the years, she maintained a close relationship as if she lived right next door.
Eva worked as a personal support worker for Tammy Cargill however, she never felt like taking care of Tammy was her “job”. Tammy was not only her friend and confidant but the niece of her beloved husband, Rick. Eva was a natural born caregiver and she knew that if there was any way she could make life easier for Tammy and her husband Brad, she would do it. She enjoyed being a part of their family on a regular basis as if it were her very own. Eva overachieved in every aspect of her role and she will be an irreplaceable part in Tammy’s life, much like everyone else’s.
Death is a thief who stole our beloved Eva. It’s extremely difficult to describe someone so extraordinary and with so much life left behind. Eva’s undeniable strength and perseverance has taught all of us that we can and will survive. Her loss has left an immeasurable hole within our hearts. With time comes hope that one day we can form a new normal without her in our world. Our grief will be betrayed by the smile we put on our faces as we try to come to terms with this devastating loss. She will be achingly missed but her memory and love will forever be carried on. Heaven gained a new angel and she will never ever be forgotten.

FLEMING, Lenore Theresa (nee Condon)
It is with deep sorrow that I announce Lenore's passing on February 6th, 2022. Lenore will be tremendously missed by her sons Tim and Troy, son in law Chris and granddaughter Becki. Lenore leaves behind her brother Don Condon (Claudette), and her sisters Anne Hockey and Janice Kelly (Chuck). A much loved, Aunt and Great Aunt of many nieces and nephews, and an extended family that spans the province, the country and afar. She will be sorely missed. Born in St Catharines, Lenore became, at well over 40 years, one of the longest employees of the Regional Municipality of Niagara, retiring a few years ago to spend more time with her family. After a few years, her health began to fail. On Sunday, that battle was over. Cremation was her wish and that shall happen presently. No services will be held at this time as we await a future where all who can attend will be free and able to do so, sharing hugs and tears together and joyful memories. She would have wanted it that way. Donations only please, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the charity of your choice. The Woodstock General Hospital Critical Care Unit, for their tireless and compassionate support, mental health support groups, including CAMH Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and The Canadian Association of Gastroenterology are great options for those who would like a recommendation for where to donate. To my wife of 59 years, I say, "Rest in peace, I will join you shortly". Jerry
