A special thank you to her niece Linda-Jean for your weekly phone calls with Mom. She looked forward to those calls and the pyjama discussions so much. Jean’s family meant the world to her. She was engaged in our lives, celebrating life’s milestones with us and offering a comforting ear when things didn't turn out. Good food was another cornerstone of her life and she loved to cook and bake. Despite our best efforts though, none of us could ever prepare veal parmigiana like she did. Jean and Meo’s deep love for each other was undeniable. They were best friends and did just about everything together. It was such a joy to watch them when they stepped onto the dance floor. They enjoyed time with a small circle of friends, with much laughter and story-telling. She showed courage in the midst of her grief after losing Meo, determined to learn how to get things done in order to stay in her home, continue to drive and stay independent. She tended his beloved garden for many years after he was gone, with much pride and great success. When Mom was in her early 90’s, “Team Jean” started to form. While family was at the core, there were countless others who provided services, care and support to her. Our deepest appreciation to the Care Team at Wesburn Manor for their exemplary care of Mom this past year. We are so blessed to have such an amazing woman as our Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandmother. He will be best known for putting his friends and family before himself, always making sure there was fresh home-grown vegetables and delicious homemade meats and charcuterie on our plates as well as an endless supply of homemade wine that kept our glasses full. It was important for him to pass on his knowledge to everyone he loved, and the impact he had on all our lives is obvious, as many of the qualities he passed on to us not only made our lives better, but most importantly made us better people. The influence of the lessons Leo taught will resonate in his family for generations, and his legacy as a selfless provider, a hard worker and most of all, his family-first attitude will always remind us of not just who he was, but who we strive to all be like. Nonno will be sadly missed, but the impression he made on this world is eternal. The family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the respiratory staff at the St. Catharines Hospital for taking exceptional care of our Father/Nonno and giving him love and dignity in his final days. EDWARDS, Daniel Roy
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father and grandfather, Dan on September 16, 2022 at the St. Catharines General Hospital at the age of 100. Predeceased by his wife Ethel (2012). He was the last to pass away of the 9 children of Ernest, born in White Cloud, Indiana, and Priscilla, a British Home Child from Bolton, England, brought to Canada through Dr. Barnardo’s child emigration. We will miss Dan’s stories of growing up in the Western Hill, where he lived all his life and of WW II.  Dan joined the army at age 19 in 1941 (5th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, R.C.A., later the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment) and was overseas for 4 ½ years, along with three of his brothers. He served in England, Italy, Belgium, and Holland during WW II. His older brother Les convinced him to join him as a Bren gunner so they could stay together as the Bren light machine gun required 2 men to operate. In northern Italy, Les and Dan were taking cover in a farmhouse under fire after Les was shot and injured. Les told Dan to leave him. Instead, Dan carried Les out and swam across a canal to bring him to safety. Les was forever grateful. After the war Dan became a carpenter, worked at the Beaver Wood Fibre Company and then Cyanamid until retirement. In 1954 he married Ethel Maki a Finnish girl from Wisconsin, and he built their home on Chetwood Street next to the home his father built. They raised two children, Janice and Dale (Darlene) and have four grandchildren: Adam, Sara, Jennifer and Lianna. Dan enjoyed sports when he was young, especially baseball.  When we were growing up, he taught us to swim in the lake and how to skate and play hockey on the ice rink he made many winters in our yard. He played horseshoes in the Cyanamid Horseshoe League, on The Mavericks team for over 20 years, setting a few records. But the sport he loved the most was horse racing, and I am sure he sparked the love of horses in a few of us! Our family would like to thank the nurses and PSWs from Paramed, Irina, Linda, and Petronella for their compassionate care as well as the doctors, nurses and support staff at the St. Catharines General Emergency and 3rd floor. Cremation has taken place through HAINE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold. As per Dan’s wishes there will be no visitation or service. Interment will be on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 1:00pm at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice may be made as you wish.

McMILLAN, Donald Angus, M.D.C.M.
May 11, 1925 to May 29, 2022

Dad died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at the age of 97. Beloved husband of Christine (nee Zumstein) for nearly 70 years. Loving father and father-in-law of Bill (Judy), Doug (Katherine), Paula (Brian), Bob (Michael), Jim (Tammy), Gord (Sarah), David (Chris) and daughter-in-law Jane. Proud grandfather of Stuart (Ali), Claire (Stu), Paddy and Dougie (Tianna); Christie, Katie (Jeremy) and Scott (Kathleen); Megan, Stephanie (Eric) and Laura (Rob); Will, Andy, Cameron and Zoe; Matthew, Gus and Luke; Leah and Sarah. Great-grandfather of Alex, Robin, Oscar, Alice, Juliette and Josie. Predeceased by his parents, Dr. W.H. McMillan and Mary (nee Fraser) and his brothers Kenneth (1923) and William (2014). Dad was a proud, lifelong resident of Thorold, Ontario. After graduating from Thorold High School, he attended Queen’s University and graduated from the Queen’s Faculty of Medicine in 1949. Six of his children followed his lead and attended Queen’s with three becoming doctors, two of whom also graduated from Queen’s Medicine. After completing his internship, Dad joined his father’s medical practice in Thorold in 1950. In 1959, Dad and his father, together with Drs. Gordon Ralph, Don Myers and Eugene Caira, established the Thorold Medical Clinic and were joined in practice in later years by Drs. J.J. Fraser, Bill Blaikie, Peter Pringle and Tim Tatzel. Dad was a dedicated and caring physician and considered his patients as friends. His practice included many evening and weekend house calls, as well as daily visits to the local hospitals and nursing homes. Dad practised medicine in Thorold for 57 years, retiring in 2007 just after his 82nd birthday. While maintaining his busy medical practice, Dad was also heavily involved in local politics. Following in the footsteps of his father who had been mayor of Thorold before serving as a member of federal parliament from 1950-1965, Dad was elected first to the Public Utilities Commission, then served on Town Council under his good friend Mayor Cec Grose. Dad was elected mayor of Thorold in 1972 and served as both Mayor and Regional Councillor until his retirement from politics in 1985. One of his proudest achievements as Mayor was spearheading the drive to make Thorold a city, which occurred in 1975. Longtime residents of Thorold will also remember the Mayor’s Report, Dad’s weekly column in the Thorold News where he updated the community on local issues and kept political opponents on their toes. Like his father, Dad was also active in the local Liberal Party. In 2013, Dad was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to recognize his many years of service to the community. Despite his busy professional career, Dad always made time for his family. While evenings were filled with office hours or council meetings, Dad was home for family dinner every night. Some of his happiest days were spent on the dock at the family cottage on Muldrew Lake in Gravenhurst, Ontario. In his retirement, he and Mom were able to spend entire summers there, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. Growing up, Dad treasured summers spent in Blenheim and Port Elgin Ontario with his many cousins, aunts and uncles. Dad lived his entire life in Thorold. He was born at home in his parents’ apartment on Front Street, above Robinson’s bookstore, and died at home in the house that his parents built in 1940. A special thank you to the many kind caregivers who helped make it possible for Mom and Dad to remain at home so Dad could live out his last years in the home that he loved. Dad was a lifelong member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Thorold, where he served as an Elder as well as Clerk of Session. While he would have wished to have a funeral service at St. Andrew’s, Dad felt that Covid posed too great a risk. For this reason, a funeral service will be held outdoors in the park beside the Thorold Seniors Centre, 8 Carleton Street South, on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11am. There will be no formal visitation; however, Mom and family look forward to greeting friends and extended family following the service. For more information, please contact HAINE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold at 905-227-1732.  Cremation has taken place and Dad’s remains will be interred at Lakeview Cemetery with those of his parents and brothers in a private service.

WHITE, Eva (Szondi)
With devastating hearts, we sadly announce the very unexpected and sudden passing of Eva White on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the age of 53. Beloved wife of Richard (Rick) and loving mother of Robert and Krisztina (Scott), Richie and Sarah (Ryan). Dear grandmother of Kaiden, Anikó, Peyton and Ronan. Sister of Mária (Wolfgang), Tibor and Sándor (Györgyi). Predeceased by her mother Mária and father Károly.
Our family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Syed Faraz Masood, the nurses and the staff at the emergency and intensive care units of the Greater Niagara General Hospital for all their efforts on May 14th, 2022.
The world has turned so dark with the loss of the light which lead our way. Eva was the glue that held our family together far and wide. Born in Romania, she moved to Canada from Hungary with her children, Robert and Krisztina in December, 2000. Here, she met the love of her life Rick with whom she spent 13 loving years. Eva was the life of every party. A real spark who lit up every room she walked into. Anyone who was fortunate enough to know her, knew what a fun, good spirited and caring person she was. Her laugh was contagious and her geniality made it easy for anyone to feel at home in her presence. Eva loved to host family and friends at her home. She was an avid cook and took great pleasure in feeding anyone and everyone who was in the mood for some cabbage rolls, chicken parmigiana, Hungarian gulyás or a nice prime rib. The menu from her kitchen was ever changing and always appetizing. She was a true master of her craft. She left countless individuals eagerly awaiting the next meal she was going to whip up and outshine the last savoury masterpiece she served.
Eva’s greatest joys in life came from spending time with her family. She loved being a homebody with Rick and spending time with their children, grandchildren and two boxer dogs, Ali and Lily. She welcomed all of her sister-in-laws and their families with wide open arms. She embraced her beautifully blended family and cherished the special relationships she was able to gain through her love with Rick.
Whenever possible, she took the long trip across the Atlantic to see her brothers, sister, nieces and nephews. No matter the distance between her and her siblings, their bond never broke. Throughout the years, she maintained a close relationship as if she lived right next door.
Eva worked as a personal support worker for Tammy Cargill however, she never felt like taking care of Tammy was her “job”. Tammy was not only her friend and confidant but the niece of her beloved husband, Rick. Eva was a natural born caregiver and she knew that if there was any way she could make life easier for Tammy and her husband Brad, she would do it. She enjoyed being a part of their family on a regular basis as if it were her very own. Eva overachieved in every aspect of her role and she will be an irreplaceable part in Tammy’s life, much like everyone else’s.
Death is a thief who stole our beloved Eva. It’s extremely difficult to describe someone so extraordinary and with so much life left behind. Eva’s undeniable strength and perseverance has taught all of us that we can and will survive. Her loss has left an immeasurable hole within our hearts. With time comes hope that one day we can form a new normal without her in our world. Our grief will be betrayed by the smile we put on our faces as we try to come to terms with this devastating loss. She will be achingly missed but her memory and love will forever be carried on. Heaven gained a new angel and she will never ever be forgotten.

FLEMING, Lenore Theresa (nee Condon)
It is with deep sorrow that I announce Lenore's passing on February 6th, 2022. Lenore will be tremendously missed by her sons Tim and Troy, son in law Chris and granddaughter Becki. Lenore leaves behind her brother Don Condon (Claudette), and her sisters Anne Hockey and Janice Kelly (Chuck). A much loved, Aunt and Great Aunt of many nieces and nephews, and an extended family that spans the province, the country and afar. She will be sorely missed. Born in St Catharines, Lenore became, at well over 40 years, one of the longest employees of the Regional Municipality of Niagara, retiring a few years ago to spend more time with her family. After a few years, her health began to fail. On Sunday, that battle was over. Cremation was her wish and that shall happen presently. No services will be held at this time as we await a future where all who can attend will be free and able to do so, sharing hugs and tears together and joyful memories. She would have wanted it that way. Donations only please, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the charity of your choice. The Woodstock General Hospital Critical Care Unit, for their tireless and compassionate support, mental health support groups, including CAMH Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and The Canadian Association of Gastroenterology are great options for those who would like a recommendation for where to donate. To my wife of 59 years, I say, "Rest in peace, I will join you shortly". Jerry

DOMINIC, Jeremiah
We, the Dominic family are devastated to announce that a beautiful heart has stopped beating on December 6, 2021. Our charismatic and beautiful son and brother, Jeremiah Dominic, passed away from a fentanyl overdose. Although we cannot say that he died peacefully, we know that he is now at peace. Jeremiah had an addiction problem but we will never let him be defined by that. Addiction is a symptom of the person and doesn’t define the person. We want people to know the person, and that he loved his family, friends and his animals. He would do anything for anyone. He would always bring home a stray or wounded animal and nurse them back to health before releasing them back to nature. He loved nature and felt at peace when he was in the woods or near water. He loved to pull pranks. He had a brilliant and curious mind. You’d never have a conversation with him without walking away learning something about history, the planets/space, or numerous other topics. Before his addiction (and even as an addict), he was very entrepreneurial; even at the age of 14, he started his very own and successful lawn business and hired his dad to help cut lawns. He also learned at a young age that he could pay his sister to do his chores. He had a huge heart and always stood up for the underdog, (even if it got him into trouble). He graduated head of his class and pursued a career as a Child and Youth worker. He was pivotal in assisting young people onto a good path in life. He made a positive impact on the youth he helped with his seemingly endless positive traits. He had the potential to be anything from a captivating politician to a researcher that could solve the climate crisis. Outwardly it looked like he had it all. Intelligence, beautiful blue eyes, a big smile that would light up the room, and the ability to engage and forge a relationship with anyone. Inwardly Jeremiah was sensitive and had struggles that he hid well from his friends and family. We all loved Jeremiah with all of our hearts but we now know that it was not enough to shield him from the world. For anyone suffering addiction, please know that you are loved so much, that people care about you and there is help if you seek it. Please do not wait. It could make the difference of life or death. Most importantly for loved ones of addicts, always tell your loved ones how much you love them. We want people to know that Jeremiah was more than his addiction, he was a son, a brother, a brother-in-law, an uncle, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin, and a friend. Dear Jeremiah - you will always stay in our hearts and be loved and remembered every day. Our lives will never be the same. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his nephews charity, Bens army, retinoblastoma department of Sick Kids https://fundraise.sickkidsfoundation.com/bensarmy. Or to CASON, Community addiction services of Niagara in the hope that Jeremiah’s death is not in vain and that he could help one more person who is struggling with addiction, or to save the pain of one more family who is forever changed and broken hearted. Your loving family, father John, mother Debbie, Sister Katrina, brother-in-law Justin, nephews Ezzie and Ben, grandmother Jenny, aunt Pat, great cousin Jude, and countless other cousins and friends who love you unconditionally. A private funeral service and cremation to follow will be held at the HAINE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

How? It is a question I ask myself often. How did you go from a sweet innocent baby boy over forty years ago to the person you were when you took your last breath being terrorized by pain? How? It is a question I ask myself often. How could I have taken away your pain? What could I have done differently so that you could still be here with me today? How? It is a question I have asked myself since your passing. How will I ever be able to tell you again that you Error number:
